A Year 9 student from De Aston School competed in karting’s IAME Winter Cup in Valencia last weekend.

Charlie Rippin, who drives for the MLC Motorsport team, competed in the senior category of the prestigious event up against 83 senior kart race drivers. The field included drivers from over ten countries and featured Word Champions and professional sports car, GT and single seater drivers for teams such as McLaren and Red Bull.

Charlie performed well to qualify 38th overall, which meant he started his four heat races in 16th position. After the results of the heats he started his pre-final race in 14th place, with the top six moving onto the Grand Final.

Unfortunately, Charlie was involved in an incident mid-race which put him out of contention for the top six, but not for the lack of trying as he put in a determined performance to finish the race strongly.

David Rippin, Charlie’s father, was proud of his son’s driving performance:

“Charlie performed very well and grew in himself over the four days. He performed well beyond the team’s expectations and should be very proud of his achievements.

“I would like to personally thank everyone at De Aston School for supporting Charlie in his quest for a motorsport career.

“Without both school and his racing Charlie would not be growing up into the person he is today.”

At De Aston School we know that young people learn from a variety of exciting experiences that occur outside the classroom as well as within it.
